Jill Mattera, a volunteer with the Arc of Orange County, is also a member of the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties (JLDOC) – Women Building Better Communities.  The JLDOC is an amazing organization of women dedicated to improving the lives of the community they live in by volunteering, outreach programs and educating the younger women of today.  Jill explained that The League wanted to give back to the Arc in a meaningful and long lasting way, what could they do for us?  It was just before springtime and our garden beds at the community HOPE Gardens needed planting.   The Arc needed extra hands to plant, weed, water the garden and we certainly needed extra funding to purchase all the vegetables, herbs, flowers and supplies that we had hoped to plant this season.  Jill organized the League into action with 15 volunteers on a sunny Saturday in April.

The garden has come to life with a bountiful of vegetables, herbs, flowers more than we have ever had before!  AND because of the League’s generosity, the Arc has two garden beds instead of one.  In addition, the League is preparing a special cookbook of their favorite recipes highlighting everything that they planted.  – Potatoes, Mint, Rosemary, Tomatoes, Basil, Zinnias, Peppers, Zucchini, Squash, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Okra, Cantaloupe, Cilantro, Chives!  We will enjoy the garden for many seasons to come.   Thank you Jill and all the women of the Junior League of Durham and Orange County.
